The name nitrogène was suggested by French chemist Jean-Antoine-Claude Chaptal in 1790 when it was found that nitrogen was present in nitric acid and nitrates. It is a common element in the universe, estimated at about seventh in total abundance in the Milky Way and the Solar System. Nitrogen is found in soils and plants, in the water we drink, and in the air we breathe. It has no odor, is tasteless, and colorless. Nitrogen is not a metal. High concentrations of nitrogen gas can be particularly harmful to human health. Nitrogen can displace oxygen from ambient air within an enclosed space leading to a dangerous build-up of the inert gas.
