Nickel belongs to the transition metals and is hard and ductile. Pure native nickel is found in Earth's crust only in tiny amounts, usually in ultramafic rocks, and in the interiors of larger nickel–iron meteorites that were not exposed to oxygen when outside Earth's atmosphere. Nickel is rarely used in its pure form. Instead, it is combined with other metals, especially iron, chromium and copper, to produce alloys that are superior to the individual metals. Nickel is used as an alloying element in cast irons, steels (such as austenitic stainless steels) and non-ferrous alloys. The most common harmful health effect of nickel in humans is an allergic reaction. A person can become sensitive to nickel when jewelry or other items containing nickel are in direct contact and prolonged contact with the skin.
