Arsenic occurs in many minerals, usually in combination with sulfur and metals, but also as a pure elemental crystal. It is is a metalloid. Arsenic and its compounds, especially the trioxide, are used in the production of pesticides, treated wood products, herbicides, and insecticides. Arsenic levels tend to be higher in drinking water that comes from ground sources, such as wells, than from water from surface sources, such as lakes or reservoirs.
